Beyond the Lab
Outside work
Things I do when I'm not at a polar station or in front of a compiler.
Amateur Radio
Licensed HAM Operator ยท Since 2015
Got my HAM licence in 2015 before I finished my degree. I still work LEO satellites, chase DX contacts, and monitor APRS when I get the chance. The radio goes with me to every deployment โ both for the hobby side and because it's genuinely useful in the field.
3D Printing & Design
Fusion 360 ยท Bambu Lab P1S
Started because I needed an antenna mount and couldn't find one. Now I use it for antenna parts, instrument cases, gear repairs in the field, PCB jigs, and the occasional institutional trophy. The Bambu P1S runs most days.
Drumming
Rhythm, not just signal
Been playing since school. Pick up the sticks whenever I'm back from a deployment. It's a good way to switch off โ nothing to debug, nothing to document, just rhythm.
Cooking
Especially in places with limited supplies
Months at a polar station with limited supplies means you either get good at cooking or you eat badly. I got good at it. Still enjoy it back home, which surprised me a bit.
PC Gaming
When the aurora isn't enough entertainment
Antarctic winter is dark for months. Gaming kept me sane. I play mostly strategy, RPGs, and FPS. Anything with interesting systems. Still play regularly when I'm not on deployment.
Polar Wildlife
Field observer, not just a field engineer
Hard to ignore when it's right outside. Emperor penguins at Maitri, polar bears and Arctic foxes in Svalbard. I photograph what I can. The Arctic Tern is my logo โ it does the same pole-to-pole migration I do, just without the paperwork.
